How Geolocation Works in Neticle?

This article explains how our system identifies the geographic origin of a post (e.g., whether a post comes from Hungary or abroad) and the different data sources used to determine geolocation.

1. URL and Domain Analysis

For web articles, blogs, and news sites, we analyze the domain extension and hosting details. For example, a .hu domain extension is a strong primary indicator that the source is based in Hungary.

2. Social Media Metadata

When capturing posts from social media platforms, we look for official metadata provided by the platform’s API. If a user has opted to share their location or check-in data, this offers the most precise geographic signal.

3. Public User Profile Data

If explicit post-level location metadata is unavailable, the system analyzes public profile information. This includes looking at the "Location" or "Home City" field that users publicly display on their social media bios.

4. Text-Based Heuristics

When structural metadata is missing, our system uses advanced text analysis and heuristics to estimate the origin. We look for specific contextual clues within the text, such as:

  • Geographic mentions: Specific local places, cities, streets, or regional landmarks.
