Manual Publish and Editing Active Surveys
By default, newly created surveys are active and ready to collect responses as soon as their link is shared with recipients. As long as no responses have been collected, survey creators can freely modify questions, answer options, and survey settings
Once a survey starts receiving responses, certain editing restrictions apply to protect data consistency.
For questions that already have submitted responses:
- existing answer options cannot be modified or removed
- some question types may have additional settings that can no longer be changed
- adding new answer options is still allowed where supported
These restrictions help ensure previously submitted responses remain accurate and comparable.
When is Manual Publish activated? If a survey has received responses within the last 24 hours, Manual Publish becomes active.
This protects respondents from unexpected changes while the survey is actively being filled out.
Instead of changes going live immediately, all question and survey structure related modifications made in the survey editor must be reviewed and published manually.
How Manual Publish worksWhen Manual Publish is active, your updates are collected in the Pending Changes Bar at the bottom of the survey editor.
This bar shows all unpublished changes waiting for confirmation.
You can then choose to:
- Discard to remove pending changes
- Publish Changes to make the updates live for respondents
This gives you full control over when edits become visible.
Advanced Activity Log and Manual PublishIf your account has the Advanced Activity Log feature enabled, Manual Publish is activated by default for surveys with collected responses.
This ensures that major modifications made in the survey editor are recorded in detail and can be reviewed later.
In this case, changes must also be manually published using the Pending Changes Bar before they go live.
