Zurvey.io's survey module has a user-friendly interface, allowing you to create your surveys and gather all valuable insights. It features a diverse range of customizable question types to cater to various use cases.
General Survey Elements
Below, we provide a list of elements that are integral to every survey created in Zurvey.io. It's important to note that these elements, while fixed and cannot be removed, offer customization options to tailor them according to specific requirements.
The title card contains the following elements and options:
- This is the Title of your survey and it will be visible for your respondents.
- Working titles only show up on the main page in your group to help differentiate between surveys and filter for them. These working titles do NOT show up anywhere for respondents.
- You can incorporate a Description field for providing additional information.
- Upload an Image (such as a company logo) here. There are options to adjust its positioning and size, and you can choose whether to display the image only on the first page of the survey or on all pages.
The closing message contains the following elements and options:
- This is the Title of your closing message and it will be visible for your respondents.
- Incorporating a Description field for providing additional information.
- URL Redirect - Closing message also incorporate a very special feature that lets you redirect respondents to other URLs. Read more about this feature under the Redirect respondents section.
On closing message pages you can upload and visualize two images (such as a company logo and additionally another banner). The first image will be positioned above the title and the other between the title and the description.
General elements of questions
Question text: this is where you provide the text of your question. You can also format the question and include links.
Help text: display a help text under the question. You can also format the help text and provide links.
Set help text as tooltip: if you choose this option, the help text will not show up under the question’s text, instead it will appear when the user hovers over a question mark next to the question text.
Insert image or video: this will appear at the top of the question. On every question element, including explanation texts, there is an option on the top to insert an image or video. Clicking on image, you can upload files, while a YouTube link can be added by clicking on the video option.
Once the image is uploaded, you can select from multiple positions. Besides the vertical layout options, there is a possibility to position the images next to the question or explanation text (left middle, left bottom, etc). To see the updated position and how it will appear in the survey, make sure to check the preview as changes are not reflected in the builder.
Most of the options are quite self explanatory. The only special option is the “As Icon”, which means the image will be positioned before the question element and aligned in one row.
There are different size options for different positions. Please keep in mind that the system scales back image size considering responsivity and the width of the actual screen on which the survey is shown. For example changing an image size to Medium on a 1096px screen width will resize the picture width to 548px regardless of the original size.
- Small (the system scales back the image to 25% of the current screen width)
- Medium (the system scales the image to 50% of the current screen width)
- Large (the system scales the image to 75% of the current screen width)
- Full (the system scales the image to 100% of the current screen width)
Please be aware that the Full option is not available for left and right positions and the icon version.
Question related actions
- Delete the question by clicking the red trash bin icon at the top right corner of the text.
- Duplicate the question by clicking on the duplication icon. The duplicated question will appear under the original one. Move the question up or down one position, or to the top or bottom of the survey by using the arrow icons on the left side of the question element.
- Add Conditions: these are useful for setting up complex logics in your survey, such as jumping to questions, or hiding/showing questions based on certain criteria. You can also combine these by setting up “and/or” connections between conditions and thus create a full condition structure.
Question Library
The following question types are available for all survey creators in Zurvey.io:
- An explanatory text option in your survey provides clarity and context before respondents fill out the questionnaire. It allows you to offer a transparent and informative introduction. For example, you can use it to communicate the purpose of the research, share privacy policies to reassure participants about data security, or convey general disclaimers.
Expert tip: Leverage explanation texts strategically between survey pages to provide context to different sections. This not only enhances the overall survey experience but also helps respondents comprehend the relevance and significance of each set of questions. - Short text: This question type is designed for obtaining concise and specific responses that won't undergo automated text analysis. It's ideal for requesting information like email addresses or phone numbers, and it includes the option to validate responses by toggling specific settings during question creation. When activated, the system automatically checks for indicators such as '@' signs, character counts, and adherence to general format rules, ensuring accurate and validated data collection. Answers provided on Short text questions will not be visible onthe dashboard on any chart, only available in static outputs (.xlsx, .spss, .csv).
- The open format question is Zurvey's distinctive feature, offering the unique capability of automated analysis for collected responses. As the sole question type allowing this advanced text analysis, it is tailored for gathering more extensive feedback. Whether you're seeking insights for NPS® scoring, general feedback on customer experience, or expanded responses to any survey question, this versatile question type is your go-to tool.
One unique feature of Zurvey.io is its ability to automatically analyze responses to open-format questions. To make the most of this text analysis capability, you can assign Custom Labels to each open-format question and conduct analysis using these labels. To add Custom Labels, simply click on the tag icon at the top of the question element, and a list will appear containing all the available custom labels in your group. With this feature, you can easily apply different Custom Labels to different open-format questions, considering the topic or context. - Multiple choice questions are the ideal choice when you need respondents to select multiple options from a list, whether it's related to service items, individuals, dates, or any other category. This question type offers the flexibility to limit the number of selected options, providing control over the depth of respondent choices. To mitigate primacy bias, options can be randomly rotated, ensuring fair and unbiased responses.
- The date question feature in Zurvey.io allows you to define a specific interval during which respondents can select a date using a convenient calendar pop-up. This functionality is versatile and can be employed for various purposes, such as gathering information on dates of birth, the last visit to a physical store, or any other date relevant to your survey. By utilizing the calendar pop-up, respondents can easily choose the date within the specified range. This ensures accurate and standardized responses.
- The dropdown question type in Zurvey.io functions similarly to a single-choice question, allowing respondents to select from a predefined set of options. However, it presents these options in a dropdown list that appears upon clicking the question. This design is particularly useful when you want to present a list of choices without occupying excessive space on the survey page. The number of options could reach hundreds/thousands, which is why you can also upload and import these from an existing file instead of typing them one by one.
In case you decide to upload different answers, uploaded files can easily be removed by clicking on the trash can icon.
To ensure a smooth choosing process for respondents, you can turn on a switch to “Show options only for search”. Thus, when respondents start typing characters in the search field, the option(s) that match those strings will appear in the list (after typing at least two characters).
The search is case insensitive and searches in the whole string for matches. Inheriting answers from previous questions as options is also available here by clicking the “Use previous answer” toggle. All previous multiple choice questions from the survey will be listed in a dropdown selector and you can select which question’s answer options should serve as options here. You can decide whether the selected or unselected options should be inherited.Important note: either the upload or the “Use previous answer” option can be activated, but both CANNOT be switched on at the same time.
Other and Don’t know/Not answering options are also available for dropdown questions as well, but keep in mind that the "Other" option is only available if "Show options only for search" is activated. - Single choice: Respondents are prompted to select a single option from a predetermined set of choices. This question allows you to set response limits unique to each option available in the question. So if you want 50 responses for option B and 150 for option A, you can set that up for each option separately and also indicate which page you want to forward the disqualified respondents to. This could be the closing page or a disqualification page (of which multiple ones can be added to one survey), which can be specific to the group of people you are disqualifying from continuing the survey. Important note: in case the question you want to set response limits for has already received answers, the already existing responses won’t be counted towards the limit. For example, if you want to allow only 100 responses for an option and the option has already received 50 responses, the limit should be set to 50 to keep to the planned limit.
- The scale question in Zurvey.io can be easily tailored to meet various survey needs. This question type offers multiple display options, including Button, Slider, Values, and a Colored slider.
- The Button, Slider, Coloured Slider type scales enable you to set minimum and maximum values for the range while specifying corresponding labels or choosing icons.
- When selecting the icon option, a range of icons become available to symbolize the ends of the scale. The available options include:
- a smiley face with a sad expression,
- a smiley face with a neutral expression,
- a broken heart,
- a thumbs down.
The positive counterparts for each of these icons are also available, so that respondents can accurately express their feelings on the scale.
When opting for a Slider, an additional setting becomes available, allowing you to set a default starting point for the slider button before respondents interact with the question. You also have the flexibility to show “No default value”, ensuring that no value is saved without the respondent interacting with the question.
Furthermore, you can choose to conceal the exact scale values to prevent bias during interaction. For added customization, the option to display labels in reverse order is available here as well like for all display types.
To further tailor the scale, you can adjust the range between 0-10, and for precision, decimal scale options are available to a tenth or hundredth.
For those seeking even more personalization, Zurvey.io offers a Values scale question. The main purpose of this question type is to set up scale questions where the numerical values of options can be unconventional. For example, you could measure satisfaction with the following scale:
- very unsatisfied = -3
- Unsatisfied = -2
- Neutral = 0
- Satisfied = 2
- very satisfied = 3
Survey creators can display values in reverse order, switch between horizontal and vertical positioning, and ensure labels are always visible when there are a maximum of five values.
The Colored slider option provides a 100% customizable color palette for both ends of the scale. You have the flexibility to input specific color codes or choose colors directly from the palette.
By default, the left end of the spectrum is represented in red, signifying a more negative tone, while the right end is depicted in green, indicating a more positive sentiment. The center color can be left a neutral gray or personalized to suit the survey context.
To further tailor the scale, you can adjust the range between 0-10, and for precision, decimal scale options are available to a tenth or hundredth.
- The number question type is ideal for inquiries related to age, salary, or any other numerical data. Zurvey.io provides options for setting minimum and maximum limits for these numeric responses. This ensures that respondents adhere to specific numeric ranges defined by your survey requirements. For added guidance, Zurvey.io allows you to personalize suffixes. Editors can input any relevant text to guide respondents on the desired format or unit of measurement for their numeric input.
- The rating question type introduces an element to gather respondent feedback, offering four icon options: star, heart, thumb up, and smiley face. The question provides three distinct icon styles, allowing you to customize the visual appeal of the rating scale. By default, no labels are displayed below the icons, but you can enable them. This feature allows you to set specific label names for each icon, tailoring the rating scale to your survey's context. A "Don't know/Not answering" option can be integrated, complete with a personalized label and value.
- Matrix questions provide a structured format for evaluating items, services, or any other criteria. This question type allows you to create a table-like matrix with row and column labels.
Both row and column labels can be manually entered. Additionally, the option to inherit row labels from previous multiple choice questions enables you to build on and reference prior responses. By default, Zurvey.io provides three row and five column options, but adding new rows or columns is intuitive, either by clicking the "add new row/column" button or simply pressing Enter when reaching the last option.Additional customization options include a "Don't know/Not answering" option for respondents unsure about a specific item, the ability to randomly rotate options to avoid primacy bias, and the option to restrict respondents to providing only one answer per column.
User can also enable the “Multiple responses per row” option, which change the radio button options into checkboxes.
- The File upload question is a simple function to ask for files from participants up to 10 MB in size. These files are stored in the cloud and are displayed via links in the exported database (and are NOT accessible from the dashboard).
- The The Picture Choice question enables users to upload pictures, after which respondents can select their preferred choice or provide feedback based on the specific prompt provided.Users have the option to permit multiple selections, effectively transforming this question into something resembling a multiple-choice question with picture options, or to allow only one selection. The labels of uploaded images will be displayed as tooltips, aiding in the identification of answers on the dashboard and in static exports, given that the actual images won't be available.
- The Net Promoter Score® (NPS) question is a tool for measuring customer loyalty. The default question prompts respondents to rate on a scale of 0 to 10 how likely they are to recommend the service to a friend or colleague. The first value in the scale can be customized from 0 to 1 if needed, and labels at both ends of the scale can be personalized. The formula to calculate NPS® is: NPS = % promoters - % detractors. For visual customization, Zurvey.io provides five display options: Button, Coloured Button, Coloured Slider, Slider, and Values. – The Button option is straightforward, displaying minimum and maximum labels, along with the numeric values in between.
– The Slider option offers flexibility by allowing a different starting point from the default 0. Both the button and the slider format have a “colored” version where users can set up color ranges by picking colors for the Detractor, Passive and Promoter sections of the scale.Colors can be picked from the displayed palette, or you can provide a specific color code.
If the Values option is chosen for NPS®, all values come with customizable labels, and you can select between horizontal and vertical orientations. (Please be aware though that in mobile view, Zurvey.io always automatically applies vertical orientation to fit the frame best). Furthermore, all visualization options provide the flexibility to show values in reverse order. - Zurvey.io offers a high level of customization for CSAT surveys, allowing you to adapt the scale's appearance to suit your specific needs and preferences. Here's a summary of the customizable options:
– Labeled or Numeric Scale: You can choose between displaying a labeled 1-5 scale with descriptive labels ("very unsatisfied" to "very satisfied") or only the numeric scale when labels are not available.
– Scale Direction: The orientation of the scale can be customized, allowing you to choose between a horizontal or a vertical layout. (In mobile view, the vertical orientation is always applied automatically regardless of the setting.)
– Always Show Labels and Values: You have the option to ensure that labels and numeric values are always displayed, even on devices with different responsivity settings.
– Reverse Order: Zurvey.io provides the flexibility to display the scale labels in reverse order if desired.
The CSAT score is calculated based on the following formula: Total number of satisfied customers (score 4 and 5) / Total number of responses x 100 - Order Type Question: This question type allows respondents to drag and drop response options to put them in a specific order according to the question's instructions.
– Inherit previous answers as options: Respondents have the option to use items from their previous answers. They can click the "Use previous answers" button and choose whether selected or unselected items should be inherited. This is handy when we want to ask respondents to put previously purchased items into order of likelihood to purchase again, for example.
– Skipping Questions. Important note: if only one answer option is inherited from a previous question, this question will be skipped.
– Character Limit for Inherited Options: if an inherited option's character count exceeds 40 characters, it will be trimmed. This ensures consistency and prevents potential formatting issues.
– Additional Options: The ability to include "Don’t know/Not Answering" options provides flexibility for respondents who may not have a preference.
– Random Rotation of Options. The provided options can be rotated randomly. This feature helps mitigate any bias introduced by consistently presenting options in a fixed order. -
CES question type (Customer Effort Score)
Customer Effort Score (CES) is a metric used to evaluate the ease with which customers can achieve their goals when interacting with a company or using its products or services. Zurvey.io uses the traditional 1-5 formula for CES questions, but it can be changed to a 1-7 scale if necessary. By default the system uses the following formula: - Similar to CSAT questions, the option to show only the number without the labels is available by choosing “number” from the dropdown menu under “type”. The option to always show the labels and values is also available.
